THHGURU EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW:
"Energy. Love. Soul. Creativity. Innovation."
With The 8th Instalment Of #thhguruinterviews , We Had The Chance To Ask Maurice Moore a Few Questions:
Where are you from & where are you currently living?
I was born in Springfield, Illinois - but I grew up in the capital city of Canada, Ottawa where I currently live.
What’s your process?
I love to draw inspiration from my life and sometimes enhance the stories I write about based on things i've seen in movies, comics, books, or my friends lives. I take all of those inspirations into the studio with me and I channel the emotions that were felt in the exact moment I experienced them. I tend to start with melodies in my head, i'll pull out my phone in the most odd places just to get a melody out of my head - the bathroom, a classroom, a meeting, on the bus - it honestly doesnt matter because when the inspiration hits you gotta run with it.
Do you prefer a particular art form – emceeing or producing?
I think of them all as one singular process, because I do produce, write, mix, and perform all of my music. So to say I prefer one over the other just wouldn't apply to me, I love all of them just the same because to me, they are.
What are new challenges when you step into the studio?
My constant challenge as an artist is to reinvent myself every time I create. Yes, the industry says it's important for people to become familiar with their own “sound," but at the same time I feel like boxing myself in to one particular style wouldn't be a testament to all of my abilities and talents musically. So going into the studio i'm always looking for a way to out do myself and that is an everlasting battle but it's precisely why I do music. I love to surprise myself, it's this high that i'm always craving and I'll spend days in a row without leaving the studio just to get it.
Top three music influencers?
THIS IS TOUGH !!! At this very moment i'd say - The Underdogs, Tank, Frank Ocean.
Can you describe your music in five words?
Energy. Love. Soul. Creativity. Innovation.
This one changes every few months but at this moment i'd say definitely Frank Ocean.
You have the chance to be anybody for a day. Who would you be and what would you do?
This is an epic question. My answer is going to freak some people out but... this is the truth. I think I might be a monk, these people are so deeply in tune with their higher selves and the universe. I would probably meditate endlessly and just encapsulate myself in silence and the energy. Being in this industry is a blessing I never take for granted but it does really disconnect us from nature and from our powers. I'd take the opportunity to unlock all of my potential as a light being.
Something that fans wouldn’t know about you?
Many of my new fans don't know that I only decided to really pursue music whole heartedly about a year and a half ago. Up until very recently, football was the most important thing in my life - I was an All-American running back and one of the top Canadian recruits of my class. Most people think my life was all about music from the beginning, but I really only have been doing this seriously for a couple years.
If you had to listen to one album & one mixtape for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
Album: Frank Ocean - Blonde (this could be premature but i'm currently obsessed at unearthly levels)
Mixtape: Kendrick Lamar - Section 80
Everyone has a goal when they first start making music, whether it be making a million dollars or to become one of the greatest. What’s yours?
I want to change the world. Seems like a general statement but I really just want to shock our culture, change the way people think, the way we consume and experience music and I want to be remembered as the absolute greatest to do what I do.
What should we expect next?
All of the new music coming has visuals completed for them - and i'm most excited for my mixtape coming for you guys this fall, so we have a big lead up planned with music and accompanying visuals.
Can you send us a selfie?
