THHGURU EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Sevn Ray

With the 10th Instalment of #thhguruinterviews, we had the chance to ask Sevn Ray a few questions:

Name: Sevn Ray (Pronounced Sean Ray)

Nickname: Shizz Ray/ Sean Rizzy

Age: 26

Where are you from and where are you currently living?

I'm originally from New Jersey and currently residing in Los Angeles, CA.

What's your process?

My recording process is something like this .. My producer sends me a track/beat and i load it up in Pro Tools, lay a melody down (verses & hook) and when I'm satisfied, I "paste" the lyrics to the melody (most the time I don't write anything down on a notepad). After I record the song (leads,backgrounds, harmonies) I get into mixing mode. I like to have two days to mix one song. Day one is for mixing & levelling and day two is for tweaking. Then i take the songs and test them on different devices. 

Who Influenced your style? How do you separate yourself from other artists?

A lot of my arrangements/backgrounds are influenced by Musiq Soulchild but other than that, my producer "Secret" influences my style. There's a certain way I like to ride the tracking Secret's production makes it easy for me to "swag it out" the way I like. I separate myself by being me. Expressing my life experiences in the music. I also write, record, co-produce & mix all of my work.

Your latest EP "Therapy" is a masterpiece. How long did it take you to complete and where do you think it ranks?

Thanks for that! I actually started recording "Therapy" in September of 2016 and finished it in October of 2016

Do you prefer a particular art form - emceeing or producing?

I love it all (singing, producing, writing) but I must say, recording may be my favorite part of making music. I just love to create. 

What are new challenges when you step in the studio?

Honestly, there's only a challenge when I have writers-block haha

Top three music influencers?

Michael Jackson, Musiq Soulchild, Tank, Brandy, Justin Timberlake ( I couldn't stop at 3 haha)

What encouraged you to start making music? At what point in your life did you decide that music was your passion?

When I was about seven years old, I realized I had a passion for music. My moms bought me a karaoke machine for my birthday and I would rather stay inside recording instead of playing outside. I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan and when i watched his videos in concert, I just knew I wanted to do the same thing. My pops used to be in an R&B group when I was younger and that also inspired & encouraged me to make music.

Dream collab?

My dream collab would be with Brandy Norwood!

How do you feel about the internet in the music business?

I believe the internet made it easier for artists like myself to get their music heard, though there are cons that came with it, just like anything else.

You have the chance to be anybody for a day. Who would you be and what would you do?

I would be Donald Trump and i would make a PSA saying "I was just playing!"

Something the fans wouldn't know about you?

Haha - I moved to LA a few years ago and developed road rage!! - I'm also a computer geek (I can build them from ground up) and I don't know how to style my own hair .. I don't even know how to part my own hair. Sad life.

If you had to listen to one album & one mixtape for the rest of your life, what would you choose?

It would be Musiq Soulchild's "AIJusWannaSing" album.

Outside of music what hobby do you turn to in order to rejuvenate your creativity? What is a typical day/week like for you?

Other than kicking ass on Xbox, I'm at a point in life where I just wanna see nature. Sounds corny but the world is a beautiful place, Man.

What should we expect next?

I'm having an album release party next month in Los Angeles and I will be performing there and other venues. Music videos, live interviews, and I'm also working on an album which i plan to release on Valentines Day!
